Athletics and Academics Chillin' for Cancer

Aug 15, 2014 | Reflection

Tommy Chillin for Cancer 1aThis week, I was most pleased to see our Athletics Director Tommy McClelland showing his support for cancer awareness and research through his participation in a “Chillin4Charity” event. Tommy accepted the challenge and returned the challenge to three of his AD colleagues to get chilled and make a contribution to the Kay Yow Foundation to support cancer research. Even on a hot August day, the cold water delivered by Champ in Centennial Plaza had to be a quite chilling experience.   Tommy Chillin for Cancer 2aTommy took advantage of this opportunity to promote Tech’s strong academic research programs and two of our faculty who are actively involved in cancer research. Distinguished Chemistry professor Yuri Lvov has developed innovative nano-encapsulation approaches for adjusting drug release rates and attaching antibodies for targeted drug delivery of cancer drugs.   Biomedical Engineering professor Mary Caldorera-Moore focuses on developing intelligent, disease-responsive drug delivery systems that have the ability to target and locally release therapeutic agents to specific cancer cells while sparing health cells from exposure to harsh chemotherapeutics. Both Dr. Lvov and Dr. Caldorera-Moore have been recognized internationally for their research. See Tommy’s video. Thanks to Tommy for his leadership in demonstrating Tech’s strong connections between academics and athletics in a very tangible way. I encourage other members of the Tech Family to share your “Chillin4Charity” stories on Tech social media sites:
