Today, it is important that we express our thanks to our veterans, those who have served the country with valor, courage, and honor. We have many students who are veterans and it is great to see them returning from service to their nation to get their education at Louisiana Tech. I have had many veterans in my classes over the years and have found them to be quite focused on their studies. But, some of those students are often still adjusting to their return from war or conflict, and if we can detect that, then I believe it is incumbent upon us to provide them with additional encouragement and support. Fortunately, we have great resources on campus to help those students and others with their transition and adjustment to college life.
We also have so many of our students who are still serving our country, either through the reserves, National Guard, ROTC, or our Barksdale program. We take this opportunity to thank them for their service to our country.
There are a number of faculty and staff on our campus who are veterans. Bob Vento, our Registrar, is one of our veterans and is an amazing individual who works tirelessly for our students. He helps many of our students transition to and from military service, and also makes the entire campus more aware and supportive of our veterans’ needs and opportunities. David Merchant, Director of Continuing Education, is another veteran who contributes much in supporting the needs of our veterans. I offer my special thanks to Bob, David, and our other faculty and staff who have served the country and continue their service through the University to support our students.
Many of our alumni, community members, and supporters are veterans who enrich our lives through their continued loyalty to our nation and to our University.
As we go about our daily activities knowing that we can freely speak about or act upon things that we believe to be right, we need to remember our veterans who fought for our freedom to do so. Please join me on this Veterans Day in saying “Thank you” to all those who have served in the defense of our nation and our freedom.
